OUR STORY

Throughout our quest to unlock the secrets of great chocolate we were inventive, working with what we had and learning along the way. Once we discovered the quality of Africa's resources (after much travelling and searching) we were able to develop our range of chocolates. This simply fuelled our passion for artisanal and handcrafted foods that led us, almost naturally, into coffee and homemade ice cream, which we produce and sell in our café at Spice Route in Paarl.


We believe that chocolate in its purest form is special and should be nurtured and crafted in line with artisanal values. This is why we make our chocolate from UTZ Certified cocoa beans, developing unique flavour profiles that reflect the personality and passion of the chocolate maker. THE HERMANUS GARAGE

A hobby that we started in our garage with machines built out of recycled home appliances, led to the discovery of the richness and diversity of single origin chocolate. 


Our journey soon developed into a chocolate obsession that continues to this day.

At De Villiers Chocolate, we take quality and flavour very seriously because we believe every chocolate experience should be a gift to the senses. It’s why our cocoa beans are sourced from the rich, vibrant soil of Africa. 


 It’s why we explore and develop unique inclusions to add to our always sustainably sourced chocolate. It’s why we lovingly handcraft our own creamy caramel, fragrant honeycomb, and crunchy biscotti and roast our nuts, flavourful coconut and aromatic coffee – to make sure every flavour explored is a gift discovered.

We’re proud to say that our chocolate is 100% authentically sourced in Africa by Africans; the majority of which is made from the vibrant cocoa bean sourced from the spirited Bundibugyo district in beautiful Western Uganda, produced by small-scale farmers also responsible for the harvesting, fermentation and drying. 


From there, it’s brought to Cape Town, where a combination of sophisticated lab instruments and uniquely homemade machines work together to create an original, truly unique chocolate. It really is a journey of flavour!

Because we care about Africa, her people and our environment we only put the best ingredients into our chocolate.

OUR PROMISE

We know that chocolate is a treat. It’s not a health food but that doesn’t mean it should contain unhealthy elements. We do not add any artificial flavours, colourants, stabilisers or preservatives and we do not use hydrogenated vegetable oils. We use unrefined, brown sugar and our products are all naturally gluten free. So treat yourself with a clear conscience.

ETHICALLY SOURCED

We source all of our ingredients ethically, mindful of doing no harm to people, animals or the environment. Our cocoa beans are sourced from Uganda and are UTZ Certified, meaning we support sustainable cocoa farming. Because we understand the importance of the rainforests to the health of our planet we do not use palm oil in any of our products.
